Made Matter brought together three design researchers working with ceramics, in conversation with potter Niek Hoogland, whose practice spans more than fifty years and is rooted in working with locally sourced clay from Tegelen, Limburg. Together with Zizi Mitrou and Mike Makes Pots, I participated in a discussion exploring the relationship between traditional pottery, industrial ceramic production and contemporary design.
The panel took the form of a live studio discussion, with pottery being made on the wheel throughout the conversation. The audience was also invited to work with clay themselves, making pinch pots while listening to the discussion.
My contribution focused on the relationship between craft knowledge and industrial production. Drawing from my research into neo-craft, I raised questions about how making is shaped by the separation of designing and executing, and what happens to material knowledge when production becomes increasingly controlled and standardised.
In conversation with Niek, we explored how individual pottery practices relate to the wider ceramic industry, and how knowledge, materials and ways of making are shaped by their industrial and cultural contexts.
Bringing together different perspectives from within ceramics, Made Matter opened a conversation about how craft can evolve beyond the traditional boundaries between handmade and industrial production.
